Experience the Arctic at its finest with Boukersen Heim
Located 350 km north of the Arctic Circle, Tromsø experiences the Midnight Sun from late May to late July, a period when the sun doesn’t set. During these weeks, throughout the evening and nigth the light remains soft and golden, creating a unique atmosphere. It’s a perfect time to go on a road trip and explore the coastal and mountainous landscapes around Tromsø.
During this 6 hour tour, we set off toward Kvaløya and Sommarøy, two islands known for their impressive views of mountain peaks, fjords, and remote islands. Along the way, we often see reindeer, and occasionally sea eagles. With some luck, we might also spot other Arctic seabirds, seals, or even dolphins.
After stopping at a few of our favorite viewpoints and beaches, we’ll arrive at Sommarøy. This island, home to an old fishing village, offers a beautiful view of the midnight sun, surrounded by blue water and white beaches. Here, we’ll make a small fire to grill reindeer sausages (or a vegan alternative), and enjoy some warm drinks. If the weather is warm enough, you’re welcome to join our guide for a quick dip in the cold artic water, or simply enjoy a stroll along the island soaking in the scenery before we head back.

As Tromsø becomes an increasingly popular travel destination, the pressure on nature and local communities is growing. At Boukersen Heim, we believe in responsible tourism and want to offer our guests the opportunity to make a positive impact while exploring the beautiful landscapes around Tromsø.
That’s why we’ve joined a programme led by the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) and Rissa Citizen Science, focusing on campfire mapping. Campfires, especially during the Northern Lights season, are too often made directly on the ground, damaging soil, vegetation, and habitats that support Arctic biodiversity.
During your tour, you’re encouraged to help your guide spot and register campfire sites. This will support important research to identify hotspot areas and guide restoration projects to return nature to its original state.
